About Nicole
After spending fifteen years of her youth as a ballet and modern dancer, teacher and choreographer, Nicole Coons discovered yoga in 1998 at a gym in New York City. Instantly drawn to the physical challenge and the concentration this yoga class required, Nicole shifted her focus to yoga and began to realize many benefits beyond the physical aspects that initially attracted her to the practice.
Several years later, Nicole became a Certified Yoga Instructor in the YogaWorks style, which draws from three traditional lineages of yoga: Ashtanga, Iyengar and Viniyoga. Her training also included studying prenatal yoga with Carrie Parker Gastelu, a leading New York/New Jersey childbirth and prenatal yoga educator. She has also practiced extensively with and been inspired by a number of teachers from different lineages, including Elena Brower (Anusara Yoga), Alan Finger, Sarah Platt and Ann Mosca (ISTHA yoga), Chrissy Carter and Kara Sekular. Nicole is also a certified kids yoga teacher through Jodi Komitor of Next Generation Yoga - the first yoga studio in the world just for kids.
She offers student-focused group classes and private instruction that are appropriate for each student’s age, level and wellness goals. Nicole guides her students to greater self-awareness, focus and health through precise instruction and alignment with breath, movement and flow in a class carefully themed to deepen the students' experience of yoga. Each class is paced moderately to vigorously depending upon the level and needs of the students. Prenatal classes draw on both her formal training and recent personal experience with a yoga-filled pregnancy and, now, motherhood!
Nicole's kids and family yoga classes provide age and developmentally appropriate yoga poses, breathing exercises, chanting, meditation, and relaxation techniques and offer a child-friendly relationship to the physical and philosophical traditions of yoga. By incorporating lessons in creativity, self-acceptance, interpersonal skills, positive thinking, personal & environmental awareness and (most of all) fun, kids and families receive positive tools for their everyday lives.
Nicole is eternally grateful for the love, compassion and encouragement of her teachers as well as of her husband and family. She is inspired daily by the smallest and largest miracles of life--the greatest of which is her baby girl, Maddie, born on December 21, 2008.
